Granton Goes Greener
On the weekend of 20th & 21st June, Granton Church will be taking over Number 7 as part of their Granton Goes Greener initiative. The project runs Share ‘n’ Wear, where people can swap clothes or take items for free as needed. Do come along and support!
They also support Smalls for All, collecting new and gently used bras and brand new pants to ensure people in both Africa and the UK have access to essential underwear.
In the same spirit of sustainability, they run free sewing classes on Mondays, helping people repair and customise their clothes so they last longer.
Ongoing Conversations about the Future of Stockbridge Church
At our extended Kirk Session meeting on 1st June, we reviewed the latest guidance from the Presbytery Deployment Group (PDG) and reflected together on the next steps for Stockbridge Church. The same day, our Session Clerks met again with the PDG. They were clear that, under the Presbytery Plan, Stockbridge cannot remain independent and must be on a credible path toward union. While the formal deadline to signal direction towards union remains 30th June, the PDG indicated some flexibility, provided they can see genuine progress and a clear direction of travel.
Over the past year we have spoken with a wide range of neighbouring congregations. It is now evident that several of these — including Gorgie+Palmerston Place, Wardie, New Town Church and Granton/Newhaven — while interested in collaboration and/or Parish Grouping participation - are not realistic union partners at this time. This leaves two viable possibilities: Broughton St Mary’s and St Stephen’s Comely Bank.
At the 1st June meeting, attended by Session members, Emeritus Elders, and the Rev John Munro, we held a non‑binding poll to gauge the mind of the extended Session. A clear preference emerged in favour of prioritising Broughton St Mary’s as our potential union partner, while also maintaining constructive dialogue with SSCB and others. We also discussed the ongoing interest from Edinburgh Academy regarding the future of our church building. There was openness to continuing those conversations, though the strong view of the meeting was that our immediate priority should be to establish progress the Union pathway.
We will be holding a Congregational Meeting to share recommendations and gather wider views (date will be advised in advance and pre-read provided). There is no cause for alarm — no closure of our church is being proposed, and no union can proceed without the consent of the Congregation. Our aim is to keep Stockbridge Church strong, hopeful, and moving forward together.
