Weddings
Congratulations! We are delighted to celebrate this special day with you - below are some answers to our most frequently asked questions
Can we get married in Stockbridge Church even if we’re not regular churchgoers?
Yes - you are warmly welcomed. You do not need to be a member of the Church of Scotland to be married here, and many couples who choose a church wedding are at different stages of their own faith journeys. The minister will be happy to explore what a church wedding means and help you decide whether this is the right setting for your day.
What happens during a wedding service?
A wedding service at Stockbridge Church blends the joy of your celebration with the traditions of Christian worship. The service typically includes readings, prayers and music, along with the vows you make to one another.
You’re welcome to include your own personal touches — readings from loved ones, favourite music, or symbolic moments that reflect your story. If you wish to have Christian readings, we can also help you pick some specific to your relationship and beliefs.
What if one of us isn’t Christian, or if we’ve been married before?
The Church of Scotland allows the marriage of couples where one or both partners may not be Christian, and the minister will be glad to talk this through with you. You also do not need to be baptised.
Re-marriage after divorce is also possible. The minister will sensitively discuss your circumstances and help you understand the process.
Most importantly, Stockbridge Church is a place of welcome. If marriage is a step you wish to take together, we are here to support you.
How do we begin planning our wedding?
Everything starts with a conversation. Reaching out to the church does not commit you to anything — it simply opens the door to friendly guidance and support.
The minister will talk with you about possible dates, the flow of the service, music, readings, legal requirements, and anything practical you may need to consider. You can ask all the questions you like.
Can we use the church building for celebrations or gatherings?
Stockbridge Church has additional spaces that may be available for gatherings connected to your wedding day. These can be discussed as part of your planning, so you can explore whether they would suit your celebration.
Why choose to marry in a church?
A church wedding isn’t only about the beauty of the building — it’s about beginning your married life in the presence of God, with a blessing that speaks of love, faithfulness and hope.It is also about community. When you marry in church, you are embraced by a congregation that celebrates with you and wishes you well in the life you are building together.
